The Thorne family first appears in the Massachsets colony in the 1630s. William Thorne and his wife Susannah Booth appear to be the ancestors of most Thornes in the United States and Canada, especially those with Quaker roots.

William was born in Dorsetshire, England in 1617 as was Susannah in 1617. They were a prolific family it tracing their descendent will be a life long project. We do have a partial listing from of his grandson Joseph's family who moved to Long Island. My branch appears to have remained in Connecticut, where Capt. William Thorne was born in 1743.

EIGHT GENERATIONS

from

WILLIAM THORNE

of

Dorsetshire, England and Lynn, Massachusetts

compiled by Joseph Middleton of Crosswicks, N.J. and

Alan McLean Taylor of Boston, Massachusetts

Genealogical Society of Utah – cat. no. 7-102 #987

NOTE: This document shows descent through William's son John only!

William1 Thorne, of Dorsetshire, England, was “made Freeman” at Lynn, Massachusetts 2nd May 1638, thirty and ten acres of land apportioned to him.” No name of his wife appears upon the various records of the family but it is assumed to have been Sarah, for this was the name transmitted in the families of two sons, and a sloop owned by his son Joseph Thorne and two others in 1712 was named “The William and Sarah.”

In 1645 he was in Flushing, L.I., the original patent of that town being granted by the Dutch Governor, the Hon. William left to him and seventeen others, “Oct 19, 1645.”

In 1646 William Thorne was granted a plantation lot Gravesend, L.I. In 1657 he was one of the proprietors of Jamaica, L.I.

His children were:

  1. William2 Jr. married Winifred Lemington, daughter of Richard Lemington, of Hempsted, L.I.; born in Dorsetshire, England, 7d. 4m. 1632; died 1686

  2. John2 , married Mary Parsell.

  3. Joseph, married Mary Bowne, daughter of John and Mary Bowne; born 1660.

  4. Samuel, married Susannah ---------.

  5. Susannah, married 1667, John Lockerson.

From the census of Flushing, L.I. In 1678, we find enumeration:

William Thorne Jr. wife Winifred and three children.

John2 Thorne wife Mary ------ three children

Joseph Thorne wife Mary ------ nine children

Samuel Thorne wife Susannah -------- six children

The census of Flushing in 1683, lists the following:

acres horses oxen cows hogs

William Thorne 150 2 2 22 3

John2 Thorne 60 2 11

Joseph Thorne 25 1 2 10

Samuel Thorne 17 1 4 20

2

John2 Thorne, son of William, married at Flushing, L.I., 9d, 3m, 1664, Mary Parsell, daughter of Nicholas and Sarah Parsell. John was made "freeman of Connecticut if he would have it" May 12, 1664. His will, dated July 23, 1709 probated the same year, leaving his estate to his wife and children, and restricting his wife's share if she "marries" again.

His son William was left sole executor of his father's will which names the following children:

  1. John3, Jr.

  2. Hannah, married Richard Cornell

  3. William married at Shrewsbury Friends Meeting, 2d, 12, 1708, Meribah Allen who was born 1686, daughter of Jediah and Elizabeth Allen.

  4. Joseph, married at Flushing, L.I., 9d, 9m, 1695, Martha Johanna Bowne, daughter of John Bowne who was born 1673; died 1753.

  5. Mary, married William Fowler, had one child, Mary3 Fowler.

  6. Sarah, married 1695, Joshua Cornwell, born 1677; brother of Richard.

John3 Thorn, Jr. and wife Catharine were named in the census of Flushing, L.I. in 1698. Who Catharine was, I am unable to find, and singularly it seems that he signed his name "Thorn," dropping the "e," and that all his descendants followed the same spelling (Thorn) until the geneology of William1 was written, since which some have added the e. His brother William seems to have done the same while the brother Joseph retained the final e and his descendants can be traced by this spelling of the name throughout the United States.

John Thorn, Jr. and wife Catharine, on Aug. 26, 1717, bought 181 acres of land near Crosswicks, N.J., where they settled. A part of this land is at the present date (1911) in possession of one of his descendants, George B. Thorn. He was called “carpenter John,” being a carpenter and farmer, and held various public offices in the township in which he lived.

His will dated 16th day of second month, 1735, was probated June 14, 1737. Catharine's will dated 19th day of eleventh month, 1766, was probated Nov. 29, 1766.

Chapter XXIX

ANCIENT MARINERS AND HEROINES OF THE LAKES

William Thorne, Pilot of Pre-Revolutionary Days

At the time Fenerao Anthony Wayne was routing the Indians in the Battle of Fallenn Timbers of 1794, Captain William Thorne was already a veteran pilot of the little sloops and schooners active in the fur trade running between Detroit and Mackinac, and later in the transportation of men, guns, and supplies between Detroit and other British posts after the outbreak the war of 1812.

Captain Thorn, born in Providence, R.I. in 1743, came west before 1770, and after living in Detroit for some time settled on the St. Claire River at Cotterville, about 1780. He was the father of John Thorn, who plotted the land on the north side of black River known as the Village of Gratlot (one of the plats that formed the town of Port Huron in 1837), and the father in law of James Fulton, who bought and plotted the first land in the City of Saint Clair.

It is said of Captain Thorn that he took the first ship through the St. Mary's River and into lake Superior ( he was in the employ of Michael Douseman, the fur trader at the time). It is also said of him that when on one occasion his vessel was windbound near an island at the mouth of the St. Mary's river, he went ashore and found there a frying pan left by the Indians, and so named the place "Frying Pan Island".

From the same source, Thornes great granddaughter, Anna Brakeman, comes an account of another incident. His vessel lay at anchor in a bay in lake Erie, and Thorn and his crew were entirely out of provisions except for the flour which they stirred into a pot of boiling water and called it pudding. He then named the place "pudding-bay" - the name by which it was known for many years, before being changed to Put-in-Bay. The word was Possibly slurred in pronunciation to Putin and then name the fixed as Put-in-Bay.

On one of his trips to Sandwich at the time of the Battle of the Thames when the British General Proctor and his Indians were routed.. Captain Thorn was arrested as a spy by a British officer and imprisoned. This was in spite of the fact that for more than 20 years before, he had been engaged in sailing British vessels on the lakes and had therefore deemed himself a British subject.

In the end, the charges against the captain were not sustained, and after nearly a year as a prisoner - during most of which time he was a captive of the Indians - Thorn was released and started for his home in Detroit, traveling on foot through the woods. There on a lonely trail he met a woman in flight from the Indians. Who was about to give birth to a child. He helped her through her confinement and after finding her shelter proceed on foot to the home of a daughter in Monguagon (now Trenton). There, as he later reported, his daughter "helped to rid him of lice" he had acquired in prison, and then drove him in a French cart to his family in Detroit to which place he had removed from the St. Clair River at the beginning of hostilities. After the war he moved back to his farm at Corterilville and continued to live in St. Clare County until his death in 1842 at the age of ninety-nine.

Probably one of the most dramatic incidents of Captain Thorn's life was the time he piloted the Croghan-Sinclair expedition on its unsuccessful attempt to retake Fort Mackinaw from the British. At that time Thorn was living at his farm and was lame because of a dislocated hip, so he was taken aboard in a chair just above Robert's landing at Cotterville. Later, as a low fog settled over the district, Thorn, who was unable to climb a ladder, had himself strapped to a chair and hoisted with pulleys to the masthead and from there piloted the fleet safely on its way to Mackinaw.

But lake navigation was old and familiar business to Captain Thorn. He said himself, that he began sailing to Mackinaw seven or eight years before Fort Mackinaw was moved from the mainland to the island, and in that case he must have been sailing along the shores of the St. Clair River long before the Declaration of Independence was signed.

85 William Thorn was a native of Providence, R. I., who found his way to Detroit N prior to, or during, the Revolutionary War. He appears as a householder in the Detroit census of 1779, being credited with 1 "woman," 1 boy, 2 girls, 2 horses, and 2 cows. Mich. Plo. Coils., X, 316. In the spring of 1782, he "earnestly" besought his discharge from the naval department; it was granted, and Colonel Dc Pcyster was about to send him to Canada, not deeming it oroper for a person with his knowledge of the lakes and the country to be permitted to remain in Detroit; however, he continued in the service, and in 1783 is listed as a master, serving on Lake Erie. Ibid., XXIV, 6. Prior to September, 1789, Thorn located in Cottrellville on St. Clair River, being one of the earliest residents of this vicinity. Here he remained until his death in 1842, and his descendants were represented here Until a relatively recent date. I-Ic was long a lake navigator, and it is said that he piloted Colonel Croghan s expedition to Mackinac in 1814. Captain Thorn had two Sons, William and John, and several daughters. John Thorn owned and platted the first village lots on the site of Port Huron. See ibid., passim, and Jenks, II 1st. St. Clair Co., 1, 148 ii.

86 Peter Traxellar (variously spelled in the mst.) lived on the Thames River; in 1799 Askin had announced to Senseman his intention to open a store in Traxellar s houae the -following season. See Askin papers, pasiim.
