Wi. . . The 1810 census shows a William Jones residing in Warwick. He is between 26 and 45 as is his wife. This may or may not be our William Jones Two Cornelius Joneses appear on the 1800 census records residing in Warwick. One is referred to Corneius Jones Sr. and shows two people in the family. The other is Cornelius Jr. with a family of five of which William B. is not one. Probate records show that this is not our family.
Quoting William B Jones's
obituary: " Seventy six years ago he came from Warwick, Orange County, N.Y., his
birthplace, to the town of Wayne. There he lived for about fifteen years and
came to Bath about 1835." That means he came to Wayne about 1820, when he was
about 17. There is a reference to a William B Jones who lived in Wayne about
that time who delivered mail by horse and buggy. This man died in 1834 or 35. A
William Jones is shown in Wayne in 1820. None is shown in 1830. A William B
Jones is shown in both Addison (pg 361) and Bath (pg 274) in 1830. It is
possible that these are father and son. Wayne was settled by Veterans who had
been given property as bounty for their sevice in the Revolution and the War of
1812. I will do a search for any military records of a William B Jones from
Warwick who was given property in Wayne. I recently found records of a Hannah Jones b. July 30, 1763 whose parents were Cornelius and Abigail Jones of New York City. She may be William's sister. She married a John Vandegriff b. April 23, 1756 in New York City. Both died in Hamilton, Ohio. This could be the Hannah in our bible records and William B Jones's aunt. They had a son William Vandegriff b. March 25, 1795 in New York City. This could be the William Vandegriff on the inside cover of the first bible. The inscription appears to be "William Vandegriff, son of John". ![]() Jones house in Bath, NY The following letter was written by Mildred Dascomb to Noel Jones in 1973. She was the last surviving descendent of William B. Jones still living in Bath, New York at that time.
We know that William B. Jones was born in 1802 or 1803 because we have his death certificate. We also have his obituary. Unfortunately none of these records including land records show who his parents are.

He married (2) ELIZABETH BAILEY. He married (3) SARAN ANNA FENTON DUNLOP. Notes for WILLIAM B. JONES: References are from family bibles in possession of C. Robert Jones and the Bath NY historical society. Also data from the 1790, 1800, 1840 & 1850 census. Also burial records from family cemetary in Milo NY. There is no hard data to provide further links. Cornelius Jones of Warwick where they lived before moving to Bath is definitely not his father. The census records and wills prove that. A page from the oldest bible appears to have a name cut from the top. Right above the date "August the 26th" It looks like the beginning of a "W" remains at the top portion where the cut was made. . The name could be WIlliam Jones, who did live there and whose family composition on the 1800 and 1810 census pretty well match what the family was. 16. WILLIAM CORNELIUS6 JONES (MILO5, WILLIAM C.4, WILLIAM B.3, WILLIAM2, CORNELIUS1) was born July 18, 1889 in Duluth, Minnesota, and died July 1965 in Chicago Illinois. He married JULIA DOROTHY FINSTER July 01, 1937 in Hibbing, Mn, daughter of CHESTER FINSTER and MIRANDA ARMITAGE. Notes for WILLIAM CORNELIUS JONES: Written by his son, Dale Jones I don't think that you could wish for a better father. Dad was 51 when I was born and I was the last of the three children. Mom was 19 years younger than Dad, and he exhibited unbelievable patience with all of us, including Mom. Dad was born in 1889 and was the middle surviving child of four boys, Charles having died in infancy. In 1902, Milo, his father just left, never to be seen again. His mother did not work, instead she depended on the children to support the family. Dad and his brother Howard had to find work, Percy being too young. So, at 13 Dad quit school and got a job as an elevator operator until a labor inspector had him fired for being under age. He then became a Western Union delivery boy, delivering messages on foot in the frigid winters of Duluth Minnesota. He taught himself telegraphy and at 14 got a job with the Great Northern RR as a telegrapher, by telling them that he was 16. Dad kept that job until he retired in 1959 as chief dispatcher at Kelly Lake. That made 56 years on the job with only two breaks, one for WW I, and the other for the great Eugene Debbs nationwide rail strike. Dad was hired back after the strike was broken, but the older workers were not. He was making five dollars a week and working 12 hour shifts, six days a week. In spite of the hours, he continued with his education and not only got a high school diploma, as well as a 2 year degree from the Superior State Teachers college. He saw a great expanse of history, from frontier horse and buggy days to landing a man on the moon. He owned some of the early classic cars including the Stanley Steamer and the Stutz Bearcat. He spoke of going down to the corner to get his father a bucket of beer and seeing gun fights on the streets. He used to laugh at the television westerns where the gunfights had them walking slowly towards each other and then drawing. He said they would spill out of a tavern onto the streets, trade a few blows with their fists, then put their hands on their holstered guns and start backing away from each other. When they got far enough away so that they thought the other guy couldn't hit them, they would draw their guns and fire. They were the poor cousins of the Howard's who owned Howard Shipping Lines as well as a lot of real estate. There still is a Howard Bay on the Superior side of the bay, and a Howard Park in Duluth on land they donated. Howard Shipping moved most of the iron ore and other freight on their ships in the Great Lakes. I saw one of their old ore boats on the way to Montreal near Sorrel, Quebec, beached and rusting, abandoned after the collapse of the mines in Northern Minnesota. Dad remembered standing our in the freezing sleet watching his aunt Catherine Howard and her husband John arrive at the Duluth Opera in their carriage drawn by six white horses. The family did not approve of his father's choice of a wife and so they received little if any help from the rest of the family. I guess that this is why Dad was always writing checks to anybody in the family that he felt was in need. He was well read and had a wonderful collection of books that I was always raiding from the time I could first read. He was a true gentleman and an inspiration to all of us who were lucky enough to know him. He died in Chicago of a heart attack in July of 1965. Mom and Dad were on their way to a vacation in Mexico. 17. PERCY MILO6 JONES (MILO5, WILLIAM C.4, WILLIAM B.3, WILLIAM2, CORNELIUS1) was born July 04, 1894. He married DOROTHY PHILLIPS. Notes for PERCY MILO JONES: Percy was the kind of an uncle that most kids dreamed of. He owned a carnival in the Dakotas. Although he never brought it to Minnesota, just the mention of his name would give me the run of any carnival that came to Hibbing. I would have all the free rides I wanted and would be adopted by the carnival family while they were in town. He was known and respected for runing a clean show and being honest and fair with the people in the show. The fact that he once pulverised the mayor of Bismark ND when ordered out of town, helped his reputation greatly among carnival folk. Whenever he came to town, he always had great gifts for us and interesting stories. Dad, Percy's brother William C., said that Percy had been a baggy pants commedian in the Vaudeville circuit. Dad said that he was always wiring him money after a show closed on the road so he could get home. He was a professional gambler like his uncle Charles, and supposedly won the carnival in a card game. Dad was always giving Percy money for a new Merry go Round or other rides. The operation was marginal and Percy it seems was always one step ahead of the sheriff and seisures by his creditors. Percy's first wife Dorothy Phillips had about as much use for him as he had for her. Percy didn't believe that Jane was his daughter and so divorced her. Years later I met Dorothy in New York CIty and she told my cousin Jane "He is just like his Uncle Percy, he will come to no good!" Maybe she was right.
