September 2009 I am doing research in the
Goshen area and have concluded that Cornelius Jones of Warwick, NY, son
of Samuel as shown
by the tree below has a very high probability of being the father of our known ancestor
William Jones.Realize that there is no hard documentation to support this, only names in the bible.

Hannah Jones b. 1639 (2nd row, first column), is shown in the first
Jones bible as is Cornelius and Abigial (2nd row, last 2
columns). Hannnah Jones b. 1763 (6th row, 5th column) is shown as
wife of John Vandegrift in Vandegrift records. John Vandegrift and
their son William are shown in the first Jones bible.
If this is correct, the descent from William B Jones
would be this.
This, then would have been William's father Cornelius who
signed the Jones bible with his last wife Abigail.
The copy below is taken from Probable Jones
Ancestors.
16. Cornelius5 Jones, yeoman
,born 1736/7, was living as late as 1813, when he was listed in Purling
Brook School District, Warwick. He was assessed for 4£ 7s 5d. on the
Assessment Rolls of Sept., 1775. He was an Overseer of the Poor in
Warwick in 1789. There is no will or administration and the family
graveyard was destroyed by later tenants. He married, according to
family records, Catherine Cunningham and had the following children all
born in Warwick Township: ..
29. i. Rebecca6
b. ca
1757, married John Chandler.
30. ii. Cornelius6 born June 1759.
31. iii Nathan6
b. ca 1760
married Dec 26, 1780, Temperance Sawyer, dau of James and Elizabeth
Sawyer. They had one dau. Elizabeth and perhaps a son, James who
married Abigail Clark. (Goshen Presb. Church Records)
32. iv. Hannah6
b ca 1763,
m_____ Westlake and had John Cornelius, Samuel and Juliia. This family
removed to Hempsted. L.I.
*This is a problem as bible records show her married to John Vandegrift, perhaps Westlake died and she remarried or there may be a problem with the
Vandegrift records or these records.
A search of early Wawick Presbiterian church records does not show the Cornelius Jones family
as members but does show his brother Capt. Samuel Jones who died during the Revolution
fighting Loyalist Indian forces commanded by Joeseph Brant. My anncestor Anthony
Westbrook was a Brant's Volunteer and was probably in that raiding party.
Although he is listed in the census as living in Warwick, it is Warwick Township, not Warwick Village.
Cornelius may have attended the church at Florida or nearby New Milford. His son Cornelius
founded the New Milford church. Unfortunately it, and New Milford were
consumed by fire and no records survive.
There are two Jones family
Bibles, one belongs to
Noel Jones jr. and the other belongs to Ross Jones. Only the front page
remains of Ross's bible, which is the oldest, dating to 1791. On the
back of that page are the dates of birth for the William Jones family
of Warwick. A very bad electrostatic copy of the inside cover of an
earlier bible which appears to have been belonged to Cornelius and
Abigail Jones also exists which has family signatures on it. My brother
Robert Jones has the Jones Hayward Bible which shows later generations.

This is the front page of the 1791 William Jones. It was tucked inside
of the one donated to the Bath Historical Society, the bible is in the
posession of Noel Jones and the page belongs to Ross Jones. The bible
was printed in 1791 in Scotland. Below are the names and dates as best
I can make out. The top corner was torn or worn off so we do know that
some of the information is missing.

The 1810 census shows a William Jones residing in Warwick. He
is between 26 and 45 as is his wife. This may or may not be our William
Jones
Quoting William B Jones's obituary: " Seventy six years ago he
came from Warwick, Orange County, N.Y., his birthplace, to the town of
Wayne. There he lived for about fifteen years and came to Bath about
1835." My research in Bath shows that he lived in Wayne, Urbana
and Howard before moving on to Bath. It appears that his brother Samuel
remained in Howard, NY. They came to Wayne about 1820, when William B was about
18.
There is a reference to a William B Jones who lived in Painted Post about that
time who delivered mail by horse and buggy into the Indian territory. Painted Post was
the southern edge of Indian territiry then. Shortly after the Finger Lakes area was taken from them.
This man died in 1834 or
35. A William Jones is shown in Wayne in 1820. None is shown in 1830. A
William B Jones is shown in both Addison (pg 361) and Bath (pg 274) in
1830. It is possible that these are father and son. Wayne was settled
by Veterans who had been given property as bounty for their sevice in
the Revolution and the War of 1812. I will do a search for any military
records of a William B Jones from Warwick who was given property in
Wayne.
I recently found records of a
Hannah Jones b. July 30, 1763 whose parents were Cornelius and Abigail
Jones of New York City. She may be William's sister. She married a John
Vandegriff b. April 23, 1756 in New York City. Both died in Hamilton,
Ohio. This could be the Hannah in our bible records and William B
Jones's aunt. They had a son William Vandegriff b. March 25, 1795 in
New York City. This could be the William Vandegriff on the inside cover
of the first bible. The inscription appears to be "William Vandegriff,
son of John".

Jones house in Bath, NY
The following letter was written by Mildred Dascomb to Noel
Jones in 1973. She was the last surviving descendent of William B.
Jones still living in Bath, New York at that time.
"This book belonged
to my grand mother's father, William B. Jones. He evidently purchased
it, He lived to be in his nineties - An old man with silver hair. I remember watching him eat, his hand shaking so hard I wondered if he
could get it to his mouth. * (NOTE: this is a familial problem. It is not Parkenson's
disease. My father had it and I have it, and obviously my great great
grandfather had it, it is controlable with medication. -- Dale C. Jones)
My brother Forest
used to sit on a blue stool in front of him and grandad would hand him
a pipe (unused) and Forest would pretend smoking too.
In his young days
he drove a mule along the canal they had no gasoline engines in those
days. He owned a house just above the old Jonesville school house. It
had a white picket fence around it and was a lovely place. - Now being
torn down I believe. - His daughter, Aunt Sarah kept house for him.
This Bible must be
at least 200 years old
Mildred Dascomb,
1973

William B's sister, Amelia as school teacher at Jonesville school
We know that William B. Jones was
born in 1802 or 1803 because we have his death certificate. We also
have his obituary. Unfortunately none of these records including land
records show who his parents are.
WILLIAM B.'s OBITUARY.
MORE THAN
FOUR SCORE AND TEN .......
Obituary of William B. Jones
One of the oldest residents of this town passed away
when death claimed and took from this world, William B. Jones on
Saturday morning, March 9th.
His death occurred at the home of his youngest
daughter, Mrs. Clarence A McCartney, who resides at East Union; his end
came calmly, and like a peaceful sleep was his transition from the
mortal to the spiritual world. he had been ill but a week and died of
old age.
Mr, Jones died aged 92 years, 4 months and 6 days,
and most of that time has been passed in this county. Seventy six years
ago he came from Warwick, Orange County, N.Y., his birthplace, to the
town of Wayne. There he lived for about fifteen years and came to Bath
about 1835. where he has since resided- most of the time on the same
farm south of the village. He was thrice married, the last Mrs. Jones
having died about sixteen years ago. One Sister, Mrs. Nancy Baily of
Wayne, and four children survive him. They are Willaim C. Jones who
lives in Montana, Mrs. Sarrah M. Carregan, Mrs Isabelle Emerson and Mrs
C.A. McCartney, all of this town. Mr. Jones was a man well and
favorably known; he had been a reader of the "Advocate" since he came
to this county. and in politics was an unswerving Democrat of the
Jacksonian type, having voted at every general election since his
twenty first.
