Baker, Figgins Genealogy

Jane Elizabeth Hills was my grandmother. I don't know much about her as she died in the year I was born. I have only anecdotal information to go on. There are vague memories of aging great aunts and a rather active great uncle Fred Hill or uncle Alf as my father referred to him. My grandfather disappeared in 1902 when my father was 13. I have to admire my grandmother for holding the family together and providing a good home base for her three boys. A century later with all of our social safety nets, this would be easy, but in 1902 a woman had few rights and few opportunities, it might be described as heroic.

I have to thank my cousin Audrey Smart and her now deceased mother Muriel for their help in gathering this information. I also visited our English cousins, the Kemps in England in 1974 and gathered some information from them. I hope to return to England to do some more research next year. According to my great uncle Alfred Hill, some of the children were brought to Canada form England by their parents and part by their uncle as they were only allowed to bring four or five children with them. This is aparently something he made up as all the children were born in Canada. My cousin Audrey thinks this may be something Alf made up as he has been known to tell tales for the fun of it. However, it sounds like something the English bureaucrats would do.
