Our branch of the Hayward family appears to have come to New Jersey from Bridgewater, Plymouth co., MA in the early eighteenth century. The Bridgewater Haywards were founded by Thomas Hayward who was born in 1597 at Aylesford, Essex, England. His son John, b. 1632 was also born in Alesford, England. His son Nathaniel, however was born in Brigewater, Plymouth co., MA. in 1640. Apparantly the family came to America sometime between 1632 and 1640. A great deal of skepticism should be employed when evaluating dates in family records from over 360 years ago.

NOTE: This takes place during the King Phillip War - 1676 - Captain Thomas Hayward, Serg. Samuel Packard Jr and two men saw indiuns lurking about Bridgewater and sent for help. Captain Church delayed in coming, so 21 Bridgewater men, including Samuel Jr. and son John Packard went out and captured 17 indiuns after a battle. No Bridgewater men were wonded. Captain Church joined them the next day and they captured and/or killed 173 indiuns. The prisoners were taken to the town pound that night and an indiun guard set over them. They were given food and drink and had a merry "night", the prisoners laughing as loud as the soldiers.
FROM HISTORY OF BRIDGEWATER

Twin brothers Daniel and Benjamin Hayward were born on June 16, 1724 in Morristown, N.J. possibly to Daniel and Elizabeth Hayward. We know nothing about Benjamin's family, but Daniel and Rachel Latiner had nine children. The youngest was Simeon, b. 1757, who served in the Revolutionary War.

David, his son, served in the War of 1812.

David's daughter Catherine, born April 12, 1832, married William C. Jones and bore him three children. She followed him through the Civil War but stayed behind in 1865 when he went to dig for gold near what is now Nevada City, Montana. She stayed with her sister Abbey McQuade and her husband Samuel in Wayne co., Michigan.

Before the Civil War Sam McQuade had established a trading post at French River on Lake Superior, a short distance up the shore from where Duluth would later be established. Some time in the 1860s or 1870s the whole Hayward family, grandparents David and Betsy, their two daughters and the grandchildren joined Sam at French River. Apparantly the good daughter Abby Elisa (Elishy) and husband Sam McQuade took on the responsibility for the whole family. Sam was a successful businessman and the first Duluth Chief of Police as well as the third sheriff of Saint Louis County. Catherine Hayward Jones died in 1906 and her last residence is listed as 16 West 5th Street, which is now a vacant lot.

Simeon Hayward 1757 -1833
Revoutionary War Veteran

Simeon Hayward, born 1757 Newton, Sussex Co. New Jersey, Died there Feb. 19, 1833. Married Eunice Rogers, Jan 12, 1775.

War Record: Furnished by the Adjutant General of the State of New Jersey, Trenton, Aug 30, 1934 at the request of William C Jones II, states as follows;

Simeon Hayward served a sergeant Eastern Regiment, Morris Co. Militia, under Cpt Wade, Cpt Hathaway, Cpt. Bates, Cpt Beach and Cpt. Halsey from 1775 - 1780, Recieved certificate #824 dated may 3rd, 1784 and signed by Silas Cowdict, for 2 years, 1 month and 9 days. For the depreciation of his contiinental pay in the Morris Co. Militia. (Battle of Elizabeth Point in 1780 and Springfield in June 23, 1780)

From the Veterans Administration Date obtained from papers on file in Revolutionary War pensions claim R 4800 on Aug. 27, 1832 (in Revolutionary Pensions) while residing in Newton, N.J., he applied for pensions. He states : "That while residing in Morristown N.J. 1775 - He was enrolled as a Minute Man in Cpt. Wade's Co. That he was then called our and served in Cpt. Benoni Hathaway's New Jersey Co. and served several tours of 1 month each. He next enlisted in Cpt. Bates Co.; Col Hathaway's New Jersey regiment; and also served Major Lindsey and Col Seely, Cpt. Halsey's New Jersey Co. In 1777 he was under Cpt. Beach when Springfield was burned, June 1780. Further that he was Commander of the Guard at the the Court House during the Revolt of the Pennsylvania Line. He was on the expedition that : "Took a picked Guard of Hessions at the battle of Elizabeth Point in June 1780." "His service amounted to 2 years, always served as Sergeant.

Other Haywards from Morris co. who served in the Revolution were Bethuel, Daniel, Ephraim. Hiram, John, Johnathan, and Silas. All brothers and cousins. Daniel was possibly Simeon's father. Bethuel and Johnathan were probably his brothers.

David Hayward  1784 -1876
Veteran of War of 1812

War of 1812 - Enlisted in Walton, N.Y. Served as Corporal in Cpt. Harmon Sawyer's Co. of N.Y. militia from Sept. 8, 1814 to Dec. 10th 1814. Three months.

In 1855 he was living in romulus, Michigan. He was allowed a pension on his application executed March 3, 1871 at which time he was living at Ypsilanti Michigan and was 87 years old. He was born in 1784. In 1873 his post office address was Duluth, MN. He died on June 14, 1876. No marker has been found for him as he was probably buried in the old Forest Hill Cemetery which was built over in 1890 as the city expanded. His wife, Betsy's marker was moved to the the new Forest Hill Cemetery and is in the McQuade family plot.

The census trail shows him moving a number times.

Records from Hayward Bible in possesion of C. Robert Jones

First, there is a newspaper clipping of the announcement of our Aunt Kittie's wedding to John G. Howard on Dec. 30, 1880. Mentioned in the article is her uncle, Sheriff McQuade. Elsewhere in the bible is a document pertaining to the wedding of Samuel C. McQuaid (note spelling) of "the county of St. Louis, Territory of Minnesota", to Miss Abby Eliza Hayward of Romulus, MI, in Wayne County, MI, Jan. 1, 1856.

Sam McQuade was the third sheriff of St. Louis Co., and first chief of police in Duluth. Also mentioned in the wedding party (Kittie's) was a Mr. William McQuade. Finally, the article mentioned a gift from Jay Cooke Howard. There is Jay Cooke State Park just outside of Duluth. I'd be interested in the history behind that. Elsewhere in the bible is a membership certificate for a Mrs. Gale U. Jones, joining the Methodist Episcopal Church in Ypsilanti, MI, on Dec. 22, 1879.

While summering in Duluth I found the McQuade plot in he the Forest Hill cemetery where I had been told Betsy Hayward was buried. The cemetery had no record of her, but in the McQuade plot I found her marker as shown below. She shares the marker with her 8 year old grandson.

She and David had been living in Duluth with their daughter Abbie Eliza Hayward McQuade. David died in 1876 but I have not found his grave yet. There were no death certificates in those days and the cemetery records are poor at best. The weekly newspaper has no mention of his demise, although he was known to be in Duluth in 1873. It now appears that there was an older Forest Hill Cemetary that was moved to the present one to make room for a housing developement in 1890. A crew of lumberjacks were hired to do the job and were told "just get it done." If you could not afford to move the grave, they plowed it under. I suspect that the McQuades did not have the money to move everybody.

11. WILLIAM CORNELIUS7 JONES (MILO6, CATHERINE MARY5 HAYWARD, DAVID SIMEON4, SIMEON3, DANIEL2, HAYWARD1) was born July 18, 1889 in Duluth, Minnesota, and died July 1965 in Chicago Illinois. He married JULIA DOROTHY FINSTER July 01, 1937 in Hibbing, Mn, daughter of CHESTER FINSTER and MIRANDA ARMITAGE.

Notes for WILLIAM CORNELIUS JONES:

Written by his son, Dale Jones

I don't think that you could wish for a better father. Dad was 51 when I was born and I was the last of the three children. Mom was 19 years younger than Dad, and he exhibited unbelievable patience with all of us, including Mom.

Dad was born in 1889 and was the middle surviving child of four boys, Charles having died in infancy. In 1902, Milo, his father just left, never to be seen again. His mother did not work, instead she depended on the children to support the family. Dad and his brother Howard had to find work, Percy being too young.

So, at 13 Dad had to quit school and get a job as an elevator operator until a labor inspector had him fired for being under age. He then became a Western Union delivery boy, delivering messages on foot in the frigid winters of Duluth Minnesota. He taught himself telegraphy and at 14 got a job with the Great Northern RR as a telegrapher, by telling them that he was 16. Dad kept that job until he retired in 1959 as chief dispatcher at Kelly Lake. That made 56 years on the job with only two breaks, one for WW I, and the other for a rail strike. Dad and other young men were hired back after the strike was broken, but the older workers were not.

He was making five dollars a week and working 12 hour shifts, six days a week. In spite of the hours, he continued with his education and not only got a high school diploma, as well as a 2 year degree from the Superior State Teachers college.

He saw a great expanse of history, from frontier horse and buggy days to our first satelite. He owned some of the early classic cars including the Stanley Steamer and the Stutz Bearcat. He spoke of going down to the corner to get his father a bucket of beer and seeing gun fights on the streets. He used to laugh at the television westerns where the gunfights had them walking slowly towards each other and then drawing. He said they would spill out of a tavern onto the streets, trade a few blows with their fists, then put their hands on their holstered guns and start backing away from each other. When they got far enough away so that they thought the other guy couldn't hit them, they would draw their guns and fire.

They were the poor cousins of the Howard's who owned Howard Shipping Lines as well as a lot of real estate. There still is a Howard Bay on the Superior side of the bay, and a Howard Park in Duluth on land they donated. Howard Shipping moved most of the iron ore and other freight on their ships in the Great Lakes. I saw one of their old ore boats on the way to Montreal near Sorrel, Quebec, beached and rusting, abandoned after the collapse of the mines in Northern Minnesota. Dad remembered standing our in the freezing sleet watching his aunt Catherine Howard and her husband John arrive at the Duluth Opera in their carriage drawn by six white horses.

The family did not approve of his father's choice of a wife and so they received little if any help from the rest of the family. I guess that this is why Dad was always writing checks to anybody in the family that he felt was in need.

He was well read and had a wonderful collection of books that I was always raiding from the time I could first read. He was a true gentleman and an inspiration to all of us who were lucky enough to know him. He died in Chicago of a heart attack in July of 1965. Mom and Dad were on their way to a vacation in Mexico.

12. PERCY MILO7 JONES (MILO6, CATHERINE MARY5 HAYWARD, DAVID SIMEON4, SIMEON3, DANIEL2, HAYWARD1) was born July 04, 1894. He married DOROTHY PHILLIPS.

Notes for PERCY MILO JONES:

Percy was the kind of an uncle that most kids dreamed of. He owned a carnival in the Dakotas. Although he never brought it to Minnesota, just the mention of his name would give me the run of any carnival that came to Hibbing. I would have all the free rides I wanted and would be adopted by the carnival family while they were in town.

He was known and respected for runing a clean show and being honest and fair with the people in the show. The fact that he once pulverised the mayor of Bismark ND when ordered out of town, helped his reputation greatly among carnival folk. Whenever he came to town, he always had great gifts for us and interesting stories.

Dad, Percy's brother William C., said that Percy had been a baggy pants comedian in the Vaudeville circuit. Dad said that he was always wiring him money after a show closed on the road so he could get home. He was a professional gambler like his uncle Charles, and supposedly won the carnival in a card game. Dad was always giving Percy money for a new Merry go Round or other rides. The operation was marginal and Percy it seems was always one step ahead of the sheriff and seisures by his creditors.

Percy's first wife Dorothy Phillips had about as much use for him as he had for her. Percy didn't believe that Jane was his daughter and so divorced her. Years later I met Dorothy in New York CIty and she told my cousin Jane "He is just like his Uncle Percy, he will come to no good!" Maybe she was right.
