Charles Edward Jones was born July 17th, 1854 of William C. Jones and Elizabeth Hayward, probably in Michigan. His grandson Noel Jones contributed everything we know about him and much of the other material on the Jones family. After the Civil War his parents moved to Boulder, Montana and in 1876 Charles Edward, then 22 was working as a store keeper at Fort Abraham Lincoln in the Dakota Territory. April 19th, 1877, seven months after Custer was killed at the battle of the Little Big Horn Charles enlisted in the 7th Cavalry as a dispatch rider and Indian scout for six months.

In June of the year 2000 I traveled to the Dakotas and Montana and stoped at the reconstructed Fort Abraham Lincoln which is now a North Dakota State Park, located just west of Bismark. They have rebuilt many of the 7th cavalry buildings including the Custer home. The Infantry compound was on a high hill surrounded by a stockade while the 7th cavalry lay at it's foot near the river. The Custers and other officers lived quite well. They had all the comforts brought in from the east. I was surprised to find that the cavalry barracks were not much different than the barracks that I lived in the miltary in the 1960's except that we had bunk beds and, except for three winter months in Korea, central heating and hot water showers. I assume that Charles Edward lived across the river at the brawling camp town that was off limits to the soldiers.

As shown in the papers below, Charles married Ellen Banks in the Catholic church in Bismark, N.D. on March 9, 1879. They were divorced in 1885 and she died in San Francisco in 1889. had three children: Franklin A. Jones living in Cordova, Alaska in 1917, Joseph R. Jones born 1882, and Florence Helen Jones who married a McMartin in Duluth, MN. Charles married Harriet R. Shoemaker in April 1896 at Portland Oregon. They had one child, Francis Jones who died April 16, 1907.

After his first wife died, Charles put his children in a Catholic orphanage. Charles was the sort of man legends were made about. He was the model of a pioneer. A rough and brawling man who bragged that he could "lick a bear in a fair fight." My father remembered him vaguely as an uncle who was a frontiersman and Indian fighter.

FLORENCE HELEN JONES
Was adopted and raised by her aunt Catherine Jones Howard. Wife of John Howard who owned a fleet of boats on the Great Lakes. Florence married a McMartin in Duluth, MN. She had a daughter Pansy who lived in western Wisconsin.

J. Rosslyn Jones was born in June 19, 1882 in Miles City, Montana. He died in San Francisco in 1956. He was raised in a Catholic orphanage in San Francisco. According to Noel, one of the few times J. Rosslyn saw his father was when he graduated from high school. We do know that he had blue eyes.

He married Grace Irene Muller on April 29. 1907. She had red hair and blue eyes. She was born in San Francisco, Ca on June 1, 1881 and died at Palo Alto, Ca on Aug 2, 1960. Her father was Christian Muller of Memphis, Tenn. born Oct. 17 1833. He also had red hair and blue eyes. Her mother was Lucy Charlotte Maria Cook born in Ken England in 1843.

This is the only picture I have of Noel, taken in his early teens. I met Noel in the early fifties when we were on a family trip and later in the sixties when I was in California. Although a well educated and cultured man who could have succeeded at whatever he chose, Noel's first love was animals. After graduating college he started a dog kennel in Palo Alto, Ca. He raised German shepherds for police dogs and whippets for racing. He was successful and apparently happy last time I saw him.

He married Doris Ellen Wishart on June 23, 1937 and raised three sons, Noel jr. born 1940, Ross, and I believe Charles.. Noel collaborated with me on the family history and filled in gaps that I would never have found. I am therefore greatly saddened by the fact that much of what he sent me about his family has been lost in moving back to Minnesota. The last I heard of them, both Noels were living in the Carolinas. I would dearly like to hear from his family and have them fill in the missing information.

Noel sr. wrote, "My mother was the youngest of the Muller family. All of whom were well educated in music arts, etc. My mother was particularly considered a very fine violinist. For a small lady, 5'2", she had a very strong "BOW", powerful and full of soul. She spoke of Yehuda Menuin as a "mechanic? while praising Fritz Kreistler and Stern. She studied under Julio Manetti in San Francisco and DeButera in New York. She had copper red hair like her dad and I as well. She practiced hours everyday until her death, and I sat for hours listening, enthralled. My sister and brother as well as myself studied piano, although I faked reading music and played by ear."

Since writing this, I have been contacted by Noel and Ross Jones who still live in California.
