Miranda Victoria Armitage was my maternal grandmother. She had died when I was a preschooler. All I remember about her is that she was bedridden and very ill. Today we suspect that she was diabetic and suffering from high blood sugar. If so, both she and my mother needlessly died of diabetes because of their religious beliefs.

The Armitage Family has been a mystery until my Uncle Harold's death when I came into possession of some papers indicating that the family had come from England in 1856. Also, that Miranda Armitage's father had been a mechanic on the Grand Trunk Canadian Railway and had died in a car accident in 1911 or 1912. As my grandmother had died when I was five, I knew little of her and her family.

Faced with another 800 mile trip and lodging costs, I felt it would be more productive to call in a professional. I contacted a Diane Oslund in the Detroit area and this is what she has found so far.

The info comes from the soundex card. I copied the census pages. As you will see it's the worst entry on the page. The last on one page and the beginning of the next page. The second page is just fine. It's the first page that is mostly black. However you can read their immigration info. Charles immigrated 1870 and been here for 30 years Sarah immigrated in 1871 and here for 29 years.

NOTE:  Is this immigration from Canada to USA? Our information shows that he came to Canada in 1856. That would make him 12 when he arrived. Did he co me as a child with his parents? Was the 1856 date bogus?
